St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, N.J., is offering secure Web portal access to patient data for community physicians and nursing homes. The hospital serves residents of Bergen, Essex and Hudson Counties.

The 292-bed hospital is using software from STAT Technologies Inc., Hazlet, N.J. Available information includes lab results, radiology reports, medical records, medications, transcriptions and admission/discharge/transfer demographics. Non-hospital pharmacy data also is available via the SureScripts national electronic prescription network. Lab results from Quest Diagnostics Inc. also are available and independent labs will be invited to participate.

Training for more than 500 physicians will continue through January. The hospital also will enable physicians without electronic medical records to subscribe to a "Lite EMR" module for a "very affordable" monthly fee. Its functions include electronic prescriptions, progress notes, acute care charge capture, secure messaging and acute care patient charts.

More information is available at smh-passaic.org and stattechnologiesinc.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
