Philips Buy Builds Mammography Line

Royal Philips Electronics will acquire the mammography modality business line of Stockholm-based Sectra for $82.1 million U.S.

Royal Philips Electronics will acquire the mammography modality business line of Stockholm-based Sectra for $82.1 million U.S.

The technology includes the MicroDose Mammography modality, recently granted Food and Drug Administration approval, which delivers half the dose of radiation compared to other mammography modalities, according to the companies.

Selling the business will spread the MicroDose technology much faster via Philips' vast distribution network and frees resources for other medical imaging lines, says Jan-Olof Bruer, president and CEO at Sectra. While the acquisition covers the mammography line worldwide, Sectra will continue to sell and service MicroDose in Australia and New Zealand under a separate contract with Philips.
