Groups Work to Certify Personal Health Devices

Continua Health Alliance, a coalition of 230 health care and technology vendors advocating interoperable personal health systems, is developing a certification program for wireless personal health devices. These include monitors, scales and pedometers, as well as services delivered via mobile phones such as personal health records and Web-based diet and wellness coaching services.

The alliance is working with the Global Certification Forum, an independent certifier of mobile phones and other wireless devices that meet criteria on a common set of tests. The 220-member forum's testing services assure mobile operators of a wireless device's interoperability across different networks to minimize duplication of testing and reduce time-to-market for new products.

More information is available at globalcertificationforum.org and continuaalliance.org.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
