Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) has announced a significant expansion of telemedicine services for which Medicaid will reimburse.

The state previously covered teleconsultations for obstetrician, psychiatric and psychopharmacology care. Now, the coverage is open to all specialists to consult, diagnose, recommend and monitor treatment, order tests or prescribe medications.

The state Department of Public Welfare, which runs the Medicaid program, also has removed a requirement that teleconsultations can only be performed with the referring physician participating. The expansion of coverage became effective on May 23, 2012.
