Research Targets Enhanced Monitoring

IBM Corp. and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology are developing technology that might dramatically increase the amount of real-time patient monitoring data available to clinicians.

The research, initially focused on monitoring critically ill premature babies, is designed to analyze a constant stream of biomedical and environmental data from multiple monitoring devices. This will give physicians near real-time results so they can more quickly and accurately predict changes in an infant’s condition.

Infection, for instance, could be detected up to 24 hours in advance by observing changes in physiological data streams, according to Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM. A hospital in Australia and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto are participating in the project. Researchers presently are using historical data to test algorithms before migrating to live data.

Researchers are seeking a third hospital in the United States to participate. For more information, send an e-mail to Leslie Plant at laplant@ca.ibm.com.
