The Washington Hospital Center will work with researchers from Noblis Inc., a Falls Church, Va.-based consulting firm, to develop software to help improve patient flow.

The 926-bed hospital, working with the not-for-profit consulting firm, will test different patient flow strategies as well as simulate the flow from its emergency department, ICU, telemetry and medical/surgical units based on various changes in operations or bed configurations. The partners hope to design software that will use live patient flow data to offer both descriptive and predictive analysis for effective bed management and devise ways to alleviate bottlenecks that can affect how quickly patients are moved into a room.

Results from the first phase of development and testing at Washington Hospital Center will be released in October. Noblis also plans to release a commercial product based on the research initiative once testing has been completed.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
