Adventist Health System, Winter Park, Fla., has signed a master agreement to enable its 37 hospitals to purchase and implement the PatientLife communications system of GetWellNetwork Inc., Bethesda, Md.

The vendor's technology enables hospitals to use televisions in patient rooms to show educational videos and allow patients to access communication and entertainment services, such as e-mail, the Internet and movies. Patients use a wireless keyboard, touch screen or hand-held device to run the system.

The master agreement includes prenegotiated terms and discounted pricing based on the number of beds in a hospital. Consequently, Adventist facilities can save time implementing the system because such processes as issuing a request for proposals, selecting a vendor and negotiating the contract need not be done. Adoption of the system among the hospitals is voluntary.

Florida Hospital Altamonte installed the system last December with the opening of its new patient tower. Three other Florida Hospital facilities will be the first implement the system under the master agreement.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
