Open Door wins second HIMSS Davies Award for use of HIT

Open Door Family Medical Center has won its second HIMSS Davies Award for excellence in the use of health information technology.

Open Door Family Medical Center has won its second HIMSS Davies Award for excellence in the use of health information technology.

Open Door is a federally qualified health center with six sites and seven school-based health centers in the New York Hudson Valley Region.

The award recognizes use of IT to improve clinical outcomes, and Open Door demonstrated impressive improvements in technology-supported asthma care in school environments as well as advancements in colorectal screening at community health centers, according to HIMSS.

Open Door further is only the second organization to get two Davies Awards—it received the first award in 2010. “As only the second community health center to be recognized two times by the HIMSS Davies Award Program, Open Door Family Medical Center demonstrated a commitment to using information technology to improve the population health of their community,” says Jonathan French, senior director of quality and value-based care at HIMSS.

Open Door serves about 57,000 patients annually with many of them living below the federal poverty level. A decade ago, the organization found that only 15 percent of asthmatic children in the schools being served were provided with a formal asthma action plan. This year, 90 percent of affected children had an action plan that resulted in reducing missed school days as a result of asthma by 90 percent via the use of tracking software that details patient progress.

Open Door has a culture of valuing and investing in information systems to support care teams in their workflows to advance patient care and population health, says Daren Wu, MD, chief medical officer at the organization. “Recognition as an award recipient is a validation of our efforts and encourages continued innovations in using technology to advance the Institute of Healthcare Improvement’s Triple Aim.”
