Two new Web-based communities designed for physicians have gone live over the past month.

Vemics Inc., a New York-based Web portal vendor, has launched iMedicor, a free secure health data exchange portal. The site is designed to enable registered physicians to communicate with each other and share secure patient files, medical records and images. It uses voice recognition and other technology to enable physicians to send handwritten information without transcription services.

The iMedicor site also enables registered physicians to seek and receive referrals from other members. The site was launched Oct. 10, and 10,273 physicians registered to use it within the first two weeks. For more information, go to imedicor.com.

Additionally, startup vendor YourCity.MD LLC, Cincinnati, has launched 300 city-specific health care networks designed for both physicians and consumers. The sites enable consumers to search for and rate physicians in their community. It offers physicians a free listing and access to patient feedback.

Consumers also can use the sites to get information on specific medical conditions and access local or national online disease support groups. Physicians also can use the sites to see how patients perceive them compared to other providers, communicate with patients and access patient information handouts.

Consumers and physicians can go to yourcity.md to access the site for their area or type in their local city with the .MD extension.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
