The California State University Institute for Palliative Care is launching an online course, The Business Case for Palliative Care, next week.

The organization says the course, which begins August 18, is designed to orient clinical and administrative leaders to the critical concepts behind the business case for palliative care. The self-paced course introduces the analyses needed to assess the impact of existing programs while identifying growth opportunities for hospitals, clinics, and home-based palliative care providers.

"The four-hour, self-paced course gives palliative care clinicians and administrators the information needed to understand how palliative care can change the way patients use health care, how those changes influence the cost of care, and what that means to the bottom line," said institute executives. "Participants will also be introduced to the types of data and analyses that are available to demonstrate how palliative care programs are adding value for the organization, the patient and the patient’s family."

Course content includes:

*Review of the components, models, and prevalence of PC across the continuum, including community-based (outpatient) and inpatient PC services

*Current evidence of PC impact on patients and families, and on utilization and costs

*Key concepts that inform the business case for different types of PC services in different settings, appreciating where fiscal and quality incentives are aligned

*Review of analytic approaches used to develop fiscal outcomes for PC

*Guidance on how to develop ROI estimates that account for staffing costs, expected revenues, and avoided costs

*Tips for developing a comprehensive case for PC that addresses the goals of improving outcomes, improving care delivery and reducing costs
