In a new blog posting, Farzad Mostashari, M.D., national coordinator for health information technology, calls 2011 a year of “momentous progress” for adoption of electronic health records and other I.T. tools.

He highlights 10 notable achievements, starting with launching of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR meaningful use incentive programs and certification of more than 1,500 complete or modular EHR products.

Other achievements include increased EHR adoption among providers, launch of standardized secure messaging under the federally sponsored Direct Project, development of Stage 2 meaningful use standards that are expected in early 2012, release of the National Quality Strategy, the rollout of regional extension centers, training new health I.T. workers, breach notification increasing security awareness, and increased focus on consumer e-health.
