The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology is seeking public comment through March 30 on privacy and security issues surrounding mobile computing devices.

ONC is looking for best practices to access, store and transmit protected health information via the devices. “For the purpose of this request for public input, a mobile device is a handheld transmitting device with multi-functional capabilities used to store, transmit and receive health information and has user control over the access to the health information,” according to an ONC statement. “Mobile devices combine elements of computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking functions. This generally includes laptop computers, personal digital assistants, smartphones and tablet computers. Mobile transmitting devices generally do not include storage devices such as USB drives.”

More information is available here.

ONC also will host a mobile devices roundtable discussion on March 16 at HHS headquarters in Washington and via a Web cast. There is no cost but registration is required. Click here for details.
