The University of Chicago Medical Center is building a new pavilion opening in 2013 and stocking it--and the rest of the existing 532-bed facility--with five medication management applications from Omnicell Inc.

Among the changes, UCMC will swap out its ROBOT-Rx automated medication dispensing system from McKesson Corp. It will use Omnicell's medication management carousels with specialized workflow software in the central pharmacy, and the G4 automated medication dispensing cabinets on nursing floors.

Other Omnicell products being implemented during the next two years include SinglePoint to store virtually all of a patient's medications in a dispensing cabinet, Anywhere RN to enable nurses to remotely review and select medication orders, and OmniDispenser to manage controlled substances in the cabinets.
