Hospital ancillary software vendor Omnicell Inc. is significantly enhancing its focus on medication management with the acquisition of MTS Medication Technologies Inc. of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Under terms of the acquisition, Mountain View, Calif.-based Omnicell will pay approximately $156 million in cash, more than double the $75 million in revenue MTS had in its last fiscal year ending March 31, 2012. For the year, MTS had adjusted earnings of $12 million, and Omnicell expects the buy will add to its earnings immediately.

Omnicell’s medication management products include carousels for the central pharmacy, automated dispensing cabinets on nursing floors, software to enable nurses to remotely review and select medication orders, and a dispenser to manage controlled substances.

MTS manufactures more than 20 automated packaging machines, and was a pioneer of medication punch cards to track adherence. Servicing more than 6,000 pharmacies, MTS gives Omnicell new product lines and a footprint internationally. In addition to the United States, MTS has business in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. MTS also opens the long-term care market to Omnicell.
