CONNECT, downloadable at connectopensource.org, is a set of services that align with national standards to move health information over the Internet. "In essence, they bring the Nationwide Health Information Network into existence," says Bart Harmon, M.D., chief medical officer of Harris Corp.'s health care unit.
Version 2.4 is "smaller and faster" than previous versions, says Tony Galluscio, program manager of records for the NHIN CONNECT program at Harris. Memory consumption is cut by 24 percent with messaging performance increased by 47 percent. Building and development time for software developers has decreased by two-thirds, with deployment time reduced by 60 percent, he adds. Other enhancements include:
* Developers can use the environment, or programming tool sets, of their choice to build products.
* A Cross-Enterprise Document Reliable Interchange, known as XDR, is a new NHIN specification enabling the pushing of a set of patient documents from a provider to a specific provider or entity. Security updates ensure data cannot be sent to individuals or entities whose certification has been revoked.
* The ability to create documents on the fly. This enables, for instance, creation of a summary of care or other documents within CONNECT if an entity's information systems do not support creation of such documents.
