NextGen Healthcare Information Systems will demonstrate its new digital pen during HIMSS11 in Orlando. The vendor previewed the product, called NextPen, at its user conference in late 2010 and it’s now available in limited release with general availability in the spring.

The pen captures writings on normal copy paper, then relies on a USB docking station or Bluetooth connection to load the information into NextGen’s ambulatory electronic health record system. Data that can be captured includes patient information, notes, diagnoses, prescriptions and test requisitions, among other information.
