The InterQual unit of McKesson Health Solutions has introduced new decision support software to help providers and payers better coordinate behavioral health treatment of autism.

The software offers evidence-based standard treatment plans for autism spectrum disorders, which have been a gap in autism care, according to the vendor. Under expanded coverage of mental health services via the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2013, 37 states and Washington, DC to date require insurers selling policies on the state and DC insurance exchanges to cover autism therapy.

The software targets primary and specialty practices and insurers to better achieve clinical appropriateness, care planning and care coordination. Autism diagnoses have increased by 10-fold in the past 40 years according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new software also compliments InterQual’s Outpatient Rehabilitation & Chiropractic set of criteria, according to the vendor. “It addresses coordination and therapy needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders who frequently receive treatments from providers from several different disciplines--such as applied behavior analysis, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy--that target the same core symptoms or functional deficits.”

Initial information on the software is here with more coming soon.
