Interoperability standards development organization Health Level Seven has formed a user group for insurers to facilitate education on how to implement standards in payer environments and ease data sharing with other industry stakeholders.

Co-chairs of the HL7 Payer User Group are Durwin Day, a supervisor at Blues plan Health Care Service Corporation, and David Degandi, manager of technology strategy at Cambria Health Solutions, an insurer and vendor.

The HL7 Payer User Group is the second dedicated user organization formed under HL7, which created an immunization user group to support the American Immunization Registry Association and aid providers in complying with electronic health records meaningful use requirements for reporting immunizations. HL7 anticipates that more user groups will be formed, CEO Charles Jaffe, M.D., said in a statement.

Several other industry sectors may find the need for user group support as HL7 accelerates development and adoption of its Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources initiative, called FHIR. It leverages the latest web standards and is gaining momentum as an open healthcare data standard.
