Johns Hopkins Medicine and picture archiving and communication systems vendor Heart Imaging Technologies are working to make a Web-based PACS available on the Nationwide Health Information Network.

Success would enable physicians without PACS to have the technology via the software-as-a-service model, "to allow any Internet Web browser to function as a medical imaging workstation without the need to install client software," according to the organizations.

The work, funded with a $2.25 million National Institutes of Health grant, will develop prototype PACS capability for the NHIN based on Heart IT's WebPAX medical image management technology. More information is available at heartit.com.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
