More Medicare ACO Advanced Payments Available

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is launching a third round of its Advanced Payment Model program for accountable care organizations participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program.
Applications for advanced payments, designed to help offset the costs of ramping up an ACO, including expenditures for new information technology capabilities, will be accepted from August 1 through September 19 for an ACO performance period starting on January 1, 2013.
“The Advance Payment Model will test whether and how prepaying a portion of future shared savings could increase participation in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, and whether advanced payments will enhance the ability of ACOs to effectively coordinate care and generate Medicare savings, as well as the speed at which they attain that goal,” according to a notice from CMS. The notice is available here on June 25 and will be published June 26 in the Federal Register.
