Voxiva, a vendor of consumer health applications for mobile computing devices, has launched "text4baby," a free text messaging service for pregnant women and those with young children.

Subscribers to text4baby will receive relevant health information messages each week on their mobile phone, timed to their expected due date or child's birth date. The messages cover such areas as prevention of birth defects, immunizations, nutrition, seasonal flu, safe sleep, and mental and oral health.

Organizations that worked with Washington-based Voxiva to develop text4baby include National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, CTIA - The Wireless Foundation, and Grey HealthCare Group. Sponsors include Johnson & Johnson, WellPoint, Pfizer and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. The White House Office of Science and Technology, and the Department of Health and Human Services also participated.

More information is available at text4baby.org.
