Pulse Oximeter Transmits Wirelessly

Minneapolis-based Nonin Medical Inc. has developed a fingertip pulse oximeter that can measure and send two of a patient's vital signs to their physician. The Onyx II Model 9560 uses Bluetooth wireless technology to transmit oxygen saturation and pulse rate data to smart phones, PDAs or PCs.

The pulse oximeter can retain 20 measurements, so patients can use it to take their readings at any time and then send time-stamped information to phones, PDAs or PCs later. The storage also could enable a home care provider to use one device during multiple patient visits.

The vendor also is marketing the device to system integrators to be used in applications for disease management, telemedicine and other clinical software. For more information, go to nonin.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
