Medical dictation/transcription/speech recognition vendor M*Modal and Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare have developed a speech recognition-powered computerized physician order entry mobile app and will demonstrate a beta version at HIMSS13 in New Orleans.

The app operates on Apple mobile devices, enabling a clinician to select a patient and verbally place an order, describing information on the prescription such as dosage, frequency and qualifiers for a medication, and transmit the order to an electronic records system. “The ability for a physician to dictate common prescription orders and have them seamlessly integrated into our electronic medical records system can create better productivity and improve patient safety,” explains Intermountain CIO Marc Probst.

The app also will support verbal orders for imaging scans, nursing procedures and lab tests. M*Modal expects to commercially release the order entry app in the fall of 2013.
