Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in Wisconsin has won the Million Hearts Risk Check Challenge for building a free mobile app for consumers to self-assess their risk of a heart attack.

The Million Hearts Initiative and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology sponsored the challenge and its $5,000 prize. More than 35 entries were submitted.

The winning app, called Heart Health Mobile, uses the Individualized Guidelines and Outcomes clinical decision support software of Archimedes. Known as IndiGO, the software analyzes data entered into the app to assist the risk of a consumer having a heart attack and the predicted effect of interventions. The vendor’s full version of the software, sold to providers and insurers, also can access risk for other conditions using electronic health records data, such as stroke and diabetes.

The Heart Health Mobile app, initially compatible with Apple mobile devices, is available for downloading here. Marshfield will release a Web-based version in March that supports devices on other operating systems, and also plans versions supporting more languages.
