Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft will focus development and marketing efforts on the Amalga Unified Intelligence System, which is a data aggregation, analytics and reporting application.
The HIS system includes electronic health records; financial and accounting; patient and bed management; laboratory; pharmacy; pathology; materials management; human resources; radiology; and picture archiving and communication applications. It was jointly developed by Global Care Solutions and Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, and Microsoft bought it in 2007.
"Working with customers over the past three years, we've learned that an all-encompassing solution is not optimal to meeting the varied and dynamic needs of health organizations around the world," Microsoft said in a statement. "As a result, this approach is not well aligned to Microsoft's broader health IT strategy moving forward."
Microsoft has between five and 10 customers and "late stage" prospects for the HIS system; a spokesperson could not be more specific. It is working with prospects on a transition plan. Microsoft has sold the RIS/PACS component of the HIS system separately and will continue to develop and market the imaging applications.
