Compensation for administrators of small and mid-sized group practices rose in 2011 but dropped for administrators in larger practices, according to annual research from the Medical Group Management Association.

For its 2012 compensation report based on 2011 data, MGMA included data on 7,907 managers in 1,306 practices, detailing compensation for 57 positions. Results show that administrators in practices with six or fewer full-time equivalent physicians earned $88,117 in median compensation, up 1.9% from 2010. Administrators in practices with seven to 25 physicians has median earnings of $120,486, up 4.8 percent, while those in larger practices had a 2.8 percent decrease in median compensation to $146,533. Administrators affiliated with the MGMA-ACMPE certification and fellowship programs earned more.

Median compensation for other managerial positions included $100,565 for human relations, $64,364 for operations, and $69,661 for sales and marketing. The report is available here, costing $195 for members and $425 for others.
