Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Mich., has gone live with clinical messaging software to enable physicians to send laboratory and radiology orders to hospitals and receive results.

The delivery system is starting with flagship Blodgett and Butterworth Hospitals, as well as two regional hospitals in its service area that are not part of Spectrum. Several radiology facilities in the region also are participating. Spectrum expects in the fall to add its three community hospitals.

Participating physicians implement in their practices the Novo Grid messaging software from Medicity Inc., Salt Lake City. More than 75 offices across eight counties are participating with another 70 being connected.

Use of the messaging software is part of an effort to law the groundwork for regional data sharing initiatives. St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, for instance, also is using the same messaging software. This enables physicians to have a single front-end view to access all results.

More information is available at spectrum-health.org and medicity.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
