Front Porch, an operator of retirement communities, will test using cell phone texting to improve adherence to medication regimens.

Under a $77,150 grant from the Oakland, Calif.-based Center for Technology and Aging, a technology unit of Front Porch will focus on improving adherence among 150 persons age 50 and over. The program will use a two-way, text-based medication reminder service from CareSpeak Communications. The service is available on any cell phone or smartphone with a texting plan.

Front Porch will conduct pilot programs in Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County. The tests will include data collection on adherence to the reminders, user satisfaction with the technology and overall health status. One Economy Corp. will provide training to participants.

How will the PHI contained in these texts be encrypted? Will this be HIPAA compliant?
