McKesson Corp. has introduced Managed Mobile Services, a web-based, vendor-hosted platform that gives provider organizations a suite of tools to manage mobile devices and control access rights to protected health information.

The service supports corporate-owned and personal smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices. It is application-agnostic, working on McKesson and disparate information systems within standalone facilities or across a health system enterprise, says Sally Hudlow, executive director of product management at McKesson.

The subscription-based service comes in Standard and Advanced versions. The Standard version offers basic tools to manage an application catalog, native email, and mobile devices at the device level. This includes registering devices, organizing groups of users and authenticating them, and enforcing mobile security policies.

The Advanced version adds additional functionality such as application wrapping which enables the administering of rules to manage homegrown apps, risk-ranking to establish role-based access rights, device shutdown or wiping capabilities, secure browser and email, and a secure content container to further safeguard protected health information.

The secure content container works in tandem with secure email, Hudlow explains. For instance, Dr. Smith may send an email with PHI to Dr. Jones, but Dr. Jones does not get an attachment holding the PHI. Rather, Dr. Jones receives a password-protected secure URL to access the attachment. Consequently, the PHI sits on a secure server in the sending facility and never leaves the facility.

The new mobile management service also includes reporting functions to enable administrators to receive alerts if device users are not downloading patches and application updates. The service is now commercially available. Hudlow declines to detail pricing structures but notes the vendor will negotiate on a price that meets everyone’s needs.
