Samarion Inc. has integrated ultrasound-based tracking technology from Sonitor Inc. into its long-term care software.

The integration will enable the Jackson, Miss.-based vendor's SamarionSolution to help long-term care facilities track residents to help prevent falls, wandering, abuse and neglect. The Samarion application also facilitates tracking of staff, visitors, vendors and equipment within such organizations.

Largo, Fla.-based Sonitor offers indoor positioning systems that run on ultrasound technology. Its applications use detectors and tags that are linked through an existing wireless network to a digital file containing information about an item being monitored. The detectors receive location information via ultrasound wave signals from the tags, which then transmit the data to a centralized system. The technology offers room-level accuracy, according to the vendor.

The Guardian House Total Alzheimer's Facility, Lake Charles, La., and Christwood Retirement Community, Covington, La., plan to use the integrated system. For more information, go to sonitor.com and samarion.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
