The Leapfrog Group, a coalition of employers pushing for increased safety and quality in health care, has marked its 10th anniversary by naming the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle as "Leapfrog Top Hospitals of the Decade."

The facilities got the designation for being the only two hospitals to consistently perform in the top ranks of the 1,200 hospitals that participate in Leapfrog's annual survey.

The survey collects a range of data from hospitals to measure such factors as mortality rates for high-risk surgeries, use of computerized physician order entry systems, and proper staffing of intensive care units with specialists, often accomplished through remote monitoring of patients.
