The Office of the National Coordinator for HIT will survey clinical laboratories to evaluate the degree to which they exchange data with physicians.

The National Survey on Health Information Exchange in Clinical Laboratories will focus on the percentage of labs able to electronically send structured results to ordering physicians, and the percentage of lab results currently being electronically transmitted to physicians in coded format, according to a notice available here.

The office will use survey results to develop a baseline level of laboratory information exchange and provide more targeted assistance to states and territories as they develop lab exchange strategies, according to the notice.

ONC plans to survey more than 2,700 hospital-based laboratories and nearly 2,000 independent labs. The similar surveys will take about 20 minutes to complete.
