Cerner Selects a Connectivity Partner

Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner Corp. will resell the HealthDock appliance of San Jose, Calif.-based Certify Data Systems to augment its own Cerner Hub connectivity services.

The agreement will ease integration of Cerner's information systems with disparate inpatient and ambulatory electronic health records systems. The combined connectivity tools will enable bi-directional sharing of test results, radiology reports, discharge summaries and other clinical information, with data transferred real-time into physician EHRs, according to the vendors. HealthDock, which sits in the physician office, also enables practices to electronically submit radiology and laboratory orders to hospitals.

Additional functionality that Cerner receives under the alliance includes a distributed master patient index, Web services and device-based connectivity. More information is available at cerner.com and certifydatasystems.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
