Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak, Mich., has established a resource center to work with manufacturers and inventors to develop new medical devices, which could include information technologies.

Beaumont, comprising three hospitals totaling nearly 1,700 beds, has previously cooperated in developmental work. For instance, it recently helped develop a centralized telemetry system with GE Healthcare, Waukesha, Wis.

The new Beaumont Commercialization Center is designed to blend innovation with the experience of physicians, nurses and other clinical staff. It will work to develop market-ready medical devices for original equipment manufacturers to acquire or license. Services include intellectual property creation; design and engineering; prototype development; usability testing: safety and efficacy assessment; and regulatory approval preparation.

The idea behind the center is to give physicians and other inventors the resources they need to turn their ideas into viable products. More information is available at beaumontcommercializationcenter.com.
