App Links Infusion Pumps with EHR

Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La., has expanded its bar code-supported medication administration management system to include the automated programming of infusion pumps.

The project was a partnership between the 740-bed hospital, its core clinical software vendor Cerner Corp., Kansas City, Mo., and infusion vendor Hospira Inc, Lake Forest, Ill. A caregiver scans bar codes on the patient wristband, medication bag and infusion pump to pull data from the electronic health records system and confirm the "five rights" of medication administration. The scan also confirms that the order on the pump to deliver the medication is exactly as the physician ordered in the EHR.

The project used Cerner's CareAware MDBus connectivity software to integrate the devices and EHR. More information is available at cerner.com/public/Cerner_3.asp?id=29157.
