The hospital received the honor for its new data analytics platform called Clinical Query. “To appreciate its value, you need to understand the current healthcare environment,” according to the magazine, which calls John Halamka “BIDMC’s ball-of-fire CIO.”
In the new health care environment, providers are expected to improve care while reducing costs by improving population health management, InformationWeek notes. Clinical Query is a clinical trials/clinical research business intelligence system, Halamka explains. It is a search engine with a data repository of 200 million data points on 2.2 million patients.
For instance, Beth Israel Deaconess can identify 66,000 patients appropriate for a specific clinical trial, get institutional review board approval, and then automatically write letters to the patients’ primary care providers to enroll patients in the trial, Halamka says.
