The American Medical Informatics Association has named Edward Shortliffe, M.D., as its incoming president and CEO.
Shortliffe, a founding member of the Bethesda, Md.-based association, will succeed Don Detmer, M.D., who will retire next year. Shortliffe will start his new duties on a part-time transition basis in January and assume the roles full-time in July.
Shortliffe is a veteran of the medical informatics industry. He is a professor of basic medical sciences at the University of Arizona and a professor of biomedical informatics at Arizona State University.
He previously served in senior medical informatics positions at Columbia College and Stanford University. Shortliffe is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has authored more than 300 articles and books in the fields of medical computing and artificial intelligence.
