Medical imaging vendor Merge Healthcare is the fourth software company to announce it will connect to the national clinical information exchange network of Surescripts, best known for its nationwide electronic prescribing network.

Surescripts expanded into the non-prescribing arena by partnering with and then acquiring secure messaging vendor Krytiq. The clinical network supports the Direct Project protocols for secure messaging. Available transactions include clinical notes, immunization summaries, Continuity of Care Documents, referrals, discharge summaries and lab results.

Merge will enable hospitals and imaging centers to transmit imaging reports to ordering physicians through their electronic health records systems via the Surescripts network. Ordering physicians also will have access to secure viewing of images on Merge’s Honeycomb cloud-based image archive.

The other vendors linking to Surescripts’ clinical network are Epic Systems Corp., GE Healthcare and NextGen Healthcare Information Systems.
