Athenahealth: We Guarantee ICD-10 Compliance

Ambulatory software and outsourced billing/business office services vendor Athenahealth Inc. has issued a guarantee to customers that the vendor will be compliant with ICD-10 code sets when the October 2014 deadline hits, or customers won’t pay for the services.

While this may be admirable on the part of athenahealth,it is misleading to providers to think that a vendor can guarantee accurate ICD-10 coding. The key requirement is that provider documentation must be specific enough to support the code assignment. While athenahealth can "guarantee" that their software can use ICD-10 codes, they cannot guarantee the accuracy of the documentation or the code assignment. Providers have to learn the ICD-10 coding and documentation requirements
