Health insurer WellPoint Inc., which is developing clinical decision support technology using capabilities of IBM’s Watson supercomputer, will get help from the Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

WellPoint’s technology will draw from libraries of evidence-based medical information, patient histories and test results, along with clinical expertise from Cedars-Sinai and other provider organizations, to present treatment options in a matter of seconds, according to the insurer.

Cedars-Sinai oncology clinicians, for instance, will help develop recommendations for appropriate clinical content. They will develop hypothetical scenarios, evaluate treatment options provided by the Watson technology, and provide guidance on improving the information and utility of options provided to physicians.

William Audeh, M.D., medical director at the cancer institute, will lead the work. WellPoint expects its first pilot projects to start in 2012.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
