CCHIT Certifies First Inpatient EHRs

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology has certified the first six inpatient electronic health records products meeting specific criteria for functionality, security and interoperability.

The commission started its certification program in 2006 and in the past two years has certified dozens of ambulatory EHRs.

CCHIT’s initial inpatient certification program has a special focus on products supporting computerized physician order entry and electronic medication administration record functions. These functions have a low rate of adoption but offer a high value for care improvement, according to the commission.

Certified were specific versions of EHR products, not all products with a particular brand name. Four hospital EHRs received full CCHIT certification:

* CPSI System 15 from Computer Programs and Systems Inc., Mobile, Ala.;

* Sunrise Acute Care 4.5 SP4 from Eclipsys Corp., Atlanta;

* EpicCare Inpatient, Spring 2007 from Epic Systems Corp., Madison, Wis.; and

* Healthcare Management Systems 7.0 from Healthcare Management Systems Inc., Nashville, Tenn.

Two additional EHRs received pre-market, conditional certification and will be fully certified once their operational use in a hospital is verified. The products are:

* ChartAccess 1.0 from Prognosis Health Information Systems, Houston, and

* Soarian Clinicals 2.0C5 with Pharmacy and Medication Administration Check 24.0 from Siemens Medical Solutions, Malvern, Pa.

A March 2007 survey of 350 senior information technology executives in hospitals and delivery systems, commissioned by CCHIT, found 66% of respondents were familiar with CCHIT’s work and 55% rated certification as a requirement for their inpatient EHR purchasing decisions.

CCHIT has started its second application period for inpatient EHRs and will accept applications through Nov. 14. More information is available atcchit.org.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
