MedApps Inc. has received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market its home-based patient monitoring system.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company has been pilot testing the system and FDA approval means it now is commercially available. Cleveland Clinic and Baptist Home Health Network were among the pilot sites.

The system includes a hand-held device the size of a cell phone, called HealthPAL. It enables the collection and transmission of data from glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, weight scales and pulse oximeters. The data is transmitted through cellular networks to a secure Web server that providers access to monitor the health status of home-based patients.

Patients also can store their monitoring data in a Microsoft HealthVault personal health records. In the near future, patients can also store their information in a Google Health account, the company says.

More information is available at medapps.com.
