GE Healthcare and Intel Corp. have aligned to invest more than $250 million over five years for development of next-generation home health technologies.

Under the alliance, GE Healthcare and Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel will develop new technologies in such areas as fall prevention, medication compliance, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and personal wellness monitoring.

Waukesha, Wis.-based GE also will sell the Intel Health Guide, which enables caregivers and homebound patients to conduct audio-visual sessions and exchange data. The product in the home is a touch-screen kiosk. The technology enables patients to have a videoconference with a provider, complete health status questionnaires, transmit data from monitoring devices, receive reminders and view educational videos.

The health guide application for the provider enables the creation and maintenance of a personalized care plan, along with video, voice and data connectivity to the patient.
