Health Level Seven has developed the Blue Button Transform Tool to convert information in a Continuity of Care Document into a Blue Button text format.

The federal departments of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs and Defense developed Blue Button as a simple way for consumers to download their health information from federal EHR systems, and some commercial EHRs support it. Most certified EHRs are able to export data in Continuity of Care documents, so the new tool will enable creation of Blue Button downloads without having to write a separate utility, according to HL7.

Community-based behavioral health provider Centerstone and ambulatory software vendor Hello Health are early adopters of the tool. It is available here for free to HL7 members and for $425 to non-members. More information is at hl7.org/EHR/.
