The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology is offering grant funding of $30.375 million for inclusion of two more communities in the Beacon Community program.

Funded with stimulus dollars under the HITECH Act, federal officials on May 4 awarded $220 million in grants to 15 communities to serve as pilot sites for comprehensive use of health information technology. The goal of Beacon Community is to accelerate and demonstrate the benefits of health information technology while laying the groundwork for establishment of tens of thousands of health I.T. jobs (see story).

Now there's money for two more sites, with letters of intent due on June 9, applications due on June 28, and awards made in August with an anticipated start date of Aug. 13.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
