Cleaner patient rooms and new alliances are among health information technology vendor announcements in recent days:
* Lancaster General Hospital in Pennsylvania is using three robots to disinfect patient rooms. The robots, from Xenex Healthcare Services and being used after traditional cleaning is complete, use ultraviolet light that is 25,000 times more powerful than the sun to kill any remaining organisms. The devices are set up on both sides of the bed and in the restroom, with a sign placed outside the door to warn against entering, and a motion sensor to shut off the devices if the door is opened. The disinfecting takes about 15 minutes per room and in a three-week period sanitized more than 700 rooms. The hospital is using the robots in high-risk areas such as operating rooms, isolation rooms and intensive care/trauma-neuro units following transfers or discharges. About 100 hospitals use the technology, according to the vendor.
* Claims clearinghouse Availity and ambulatory software vendor Greenway Medical Technologies are integrating their systems to enable physicians in Florida to exchange clinical information and patient care summaries, via the electronic health records system, with insurer Florida Blue. The care summary is built from the payer’s claims data. The integration also will enable physicians to send clinical data via the EHR to the insurer for quality reporting purposes.
* OhioHealth, with 17 hospitals, is using ICD-10 risk analysis and code management software from Edifecs Inc. as part of its migration to the code sets. The risk assessment application will help identify risk by facility, service line and physician, enabling better targeting of educational efforts. The code management software includes mapping applications.
* Technology implementation services consultancy CTG Health Solutions will provide integration and data warehouse services for the data analytics applications in the core insurance transactions processing platform of HealthEdge. The service will aid insurers in turning transactional data into actionable business intelligence, according to CTG.
