HIPAA 5010 Publisher Offers Compliance Aid

The WPC Services consulting subsidiary of Washington Publishing Company, has launched a program to help hospitals and delivery systems evaluate progress in adopting the new HIPAA 5010 transaction sets by January 2012.

Washington Publishing is the publisher of the HIPAA implementation guides. Eric Mueller, president at WPC Services, says there are at least 150 "hidden" issues that could lead to claims being reduced or denied next year. While providers and insurers often see 5010 as a mapping and technology issue, 70 percent of migration work involves business workflow changes that affect the entire billing cycle, he contends.

The new service, called "5010 Check-Up" is a two-week program with a flat fee of $20,000 that includes an overview of data and business change requirements; an assessment of workflow, process and technology changes for up to three HIPAA transactions; and a findings report with recommendations.

The service is designed to accelerate organizations' 5010 compliance work as many are behind schedule. Testing that should have started in early 2011 is just now ramping up, Mueller says. More information is available at wpc-services.com.
