The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York has won a 2012 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award of Excellence for use of health information technology.

The organization was honored for its use of a $120 million electronic health records system from Epic Systems Corp., implemented between 2006 and 2012. The Davies Award is named for Nicholas Davies, M.D., a practicing physician and member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Improving the Patient Record, who died in an airplane crash in 1991.

Mount Sinai was honored in part for its change management initiative that resulted in the EHR training of 7,149 employees and a clinical transformation of the organization. Benefits from the EHR include reducing 30-day readmission rates of Medicare patients by 56 percent, improving the monitoring of inpatient and outpatient vaccinations by migrating to a centralized database, and annual savings of $20 million from reduced transcription costs and other expenses for managing paper records. More information is available at himss.org/davies/index.asp.

Other 2012 Davies Awards previously announced are Hawaii Pacific Health in the Enterprise category, and Ambulatory winners Dr. Jeremy Bradley Family Practice Center in Owensboro, Ky.; and Coastal Medical Inc. of Providence, R.I. Winners also will be selected in the Community Health and Public Health categories, with all winners honored at the 2013 HIMSS Conference next March in New Orleans.
