The Kansas Health Information Network has linked to the BioSense electronic public health surveillance network of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The HIE is sending anonymous aggregate syndromic data to BioSense to aid in the identification and tracking of potential public health treats. The CDC recently redesigned BioSense to improve standardization and collaboration across states.

Emergency department submission of syndromic data via the HIE also will aid in meeting a Stage 2 meaningful use requirement to share the data with public health agencies. Informatics Corporation of America, known as ICA, is the platform vendor for the Kansas Health Information Network.

Information on the HIE is available here with details on BioSense here.
