NextGen Healthcare Information Systems will be the third major electronic health records vendor to use the emerging national clinical health information exchange network of Surescripts, which has long operated a national electronic prescribing network.

Surescripts’ clinical network uses the secure messaging software of Kryptiq, which was a partner and recently acquired by Surescripts. Epic Systems and GE Healthcare have in recent months linked to the network, as have hundreds of hospitals and other providers. For instance, a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is enabling 650 hospital labs to connect.

The Surescripts network supports the Direct Project protocols for secure messaging. Available transactions include clinical notes, immunization summaries, Continuity of Care Documents, referrals, discharge summaries and lab results.
